Xinjiang Walnuts vs California Walnuts: A Buyer’s Comparison

May 2026  ·  SUNORIGIN Trade Insights

For importers and food manufacturers sourcing walnut kernels, the choice between Xinjiang and California origin is not simply a matter of price. Flavour profile, kernel colour, fat composition, and supply chain structure differ significantly between the two origins.

    Origin and Growing Conditions

California walnuts (primarily Chandler variety) are grown in the Central Valley under intensive irrigation. Xinjiang walnuts — primarily from Hotan and Aksu prefectures — are cultivated at 1,200–1,800 m altitude with natural snowmelt irrigation, lower humidity, and a wider diurnal temperature range. These conditions produce a denser kernel with a more complex flavour.

    Which Markets Prefer Xinjiang Walnuts?

Middle Eastern buyers consistently prefer Xinjiang walnuts for their lighter colour and richer flavour — both important in traditional sweets like baklava and ma’amoul. Central Asian markets have historically sourced from Xinjiang due to proximity and cultural familiarity. European buyers increasingly source Xinjiang kernels for bakery and confectionery applications where California pricing is prohibitive.

Key advantage for importers: Xinjiang walnut kernels are typically 25–40% lower in FOB cost than California equivalents at comparable quality grades, while meeting the same EU phytosanitary and food safety standards.

Exporting Dried Fruits from China: A Buyer’s Documentation Guide

May 2026  ·  SUNORIGIN Trade Insights

First-time importers of Chinese dried fruits often encounter customs delays — not because of product quality, but because of missing or incorrect documentation. This guide covers every certificate you need for a clean clearance.

    GACC Registration: What It Means

Since January 2022, all food exporters from China must be registered with GACC. This number appears on all export documentation and is verified by the importing country. Without it, shipments are rejected at port. SUNORIGIN facilities are fully GACC-registered.

    Requirements by Market

EU / UK: Phytosanitary + pesticide residue testing to EC 396/2005. Pre-notification via TRACES NT for some products.

GCC (UAE, Saudi, Qatar): Halal + phytosanitary + GACC. Arabic labelling required for retail packs.

Central Asia: Phytosanitary + Certificate of Origin (Form ST-1 for EEU preferential rates).

    How SUNORIGIN Handles Documentation

We prepare the full document package for every shipment and deliver a complete digital set 3–5 days before vessel departure. Buyers never chase paperwork.

  • Why Xinjiang Produces the World’s Finest Raisins

Why Xinjiang Produces the World’s Finest Raisins

Why Xinjiang Produces the World’s Finest Raisins

May 2026  ·  SUNORIGIN Trade Insights

When buyers ask us why Xinjiang raisins command a premium in markets from Dubai to Hamburg, the answer lies in geography, climate, and a drying tradition that no industrial process can replicate.

The Turpan Basin: A Natural Drying Chamber

Turpan sits 154 metres below sea level — the second-lowest depression on Earth. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 45°C, humidity drops below 20%, and the Flaming Mountains block moisture from the north. This creates a natural dehydration environment that concentrates sugars without sulphur dioxide or artificial preservatives.

The result: raisins with 70–75% natural sugar content, deep amber colour, and a shelf life of 18–24 months without additives.

Seedless Varieties Unique to the Region

The dominant variety — Wuhebai (无核白) — is a seedless white grape cultivated in Turpan for over 2,000 years. Its thin skin, high sugar-to-acid ratio, and low moisture content make it ideal for bakery, confectionery, and trail mix applications.

“A single hectare of Turpan vineyard produces 3–5 tonnes of fresh grapes. After natural air-drying in traditional liangfang (晾房) ventilation houses, the yield is 700–900 kg of finished raisins.”

    Certifications That Open Borders

All SUNORIGIN raisins are exported under GACC registration with phytosanitary certificates from AQSIQ. Halal certification covers GCC and Southeast Asian markets. Certificate of Origin (Form E) is available for ASEAN FTA preferential tariff treatment.

  • Xinjiang Dried Apricots: SO₂-Free Wholesale for Health & Halal Markets

Dried apricots from Xinjiang are a distinct product from Turkish or Iranian varieties — smaller, more intensely flavoured, and naturally sun-dried without sulphur dioxide. This makes them increasingly popular in health food, organic, and halal markets globally.

    Xinjiang vs. Turkish Dried Apricots

Turkish apricots (Malatya) are large, soft, and bright orange due to SO₂ treatment. Xinjiang apricots are smaller, dark amber to brown, with a concentrated sweet-tart flavour and no additives. For buyers targeting clean-label, organic, or halal-certified products, Xinjiang is the preferred origin.

    Available Grades

    • Whole sun-dried (Grade A) — Uniform size 25–35 mm, moisture 18–22%, no SO₂. Best for retail and gifting.
    • Whole sun-dried (Grade B) — Mixed size, slight colour variation. Suited for food service and bulk packing.
    • Pitted halves — Stone removed, halved. Popular for bakery and confectionery.
    • Apricot kernels — Sweet variety (low amygdalin), used in snack mixes and traditional medicine markets.

    Key Markets

Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait) — largest volume buyers, prefer whole Grade A with halal cert. EU (Germany, Netherlands, UK) — organic certification increasingly required. Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan) — price-sensitive, Grade B and bulk acceptable.

SUNORIGIN supplies halal-certified, SO₂-free Xinjiang dried apricots. Phytosanitary and SGS inspection reports available. MOQ 500 kg. FCL 20ft ≈ 14 MT.

  • Xinjiang Raisins: Wholesale Sourcing Guide for Importers (2025)

Xinjiang raisins account for over 70% of China’s total raisin output — yet most international buyers still source through intermediaries, paying 20–40% above origin price. This guide explains how direct sourcing works and what to look for.

Why Xinjiang Dominates Global Raisin Production

The Turpan Basin sits at 154 metres below sea level — the lowest point in China and one of the hottest, driest places on earth. Over 3,000 hours of annual sunshine, minimal rainfall, and alkaline desert soils create ideal conditions for sugar concentration in grapes. The result: raisins with Brix levels of 68–75°, compared to 55–62° for California Thompson seedless.

    Key Varieties for Export

    • Wuhebai (无核白) — Seedless white, the most exported variety. Light green to golden, mild flavour. MOQ 1 MT.
    • Heizijin (黑子金) — Black seedless, intense flavour, popular in Middle East markets.
    • Flame Seedless — Red-purple, larger berry, premium retail grade.
    • Muscat (玫瑰香) — Aromatic, high sugar, suited for confectionery and bakery.

What to Specify in Your RFQ

When requesting a wholesale quote, include: variety, grade (A/B/C), moisture content target (typically 14–16%), packaging (25 kg carton, 10 kg box, or bulk bag), and destination port. This allows suppliers to quote accurately without back-and-forth.

SUNORIGIN exports all four varieties with phytosanitary certificates, SGS quality reports, and halal certification available on request. Minimum order 500 kg per SKU.

    Harvest Calendar

Xinjiang raisins are harvested August–October. Sun-dried varieties (the traditional method using adobe drying houses called airdrying rooms) take 35–45 days. Mechanical drying is available for year-round supply. New-season stock typically reaches export readiness by November.
